Last Day for Deep Discount to Become a Deep Learner
What are the Top Areas You Should Develop?
I've thought long and hard about this. One of them is to become really good at learning.
If we are not good at deep learning, we are operating with a "leaky tap." Lots of wastage, emotional depletion and even demoralisation from the effect of "moving without traveling."
This is why I'm often harping about the practice of capturing Weekly Therapy Learnings (as an example, see this article Parameters and Samples for Capturing Weekly Therapy Learnings). Practitioners that I've consulted with have found this to be a "high-yield" exercise.
Transfer of Learning
Learning simply means "transfer,' i.e., how I process an input and generalise this to another context.
When you learn something in one context, like in a classroom, and whether you are able to apply it to another context, say into real life, is at the heart of learning.
Yet, transfer of learning rarely occurs. Psychologist Robert Haskell says that “without exaggeration, (there is) an education scandal.”
Over the last 9 decades clearly show that individuals have failed to achieve transfer of learning on any significant level.
Perhaps that's because most of our learning is a "learning for the test" approach. We only learned for it to work in specific context. So when the context change, we can't seem to generalise the learnings. It's like the feeling I get when I learn a particular approach in a training and can't seem to generalise that good stuff to the clients that I'm working with despite my best efforts to stick to protocol.
Learning not just "how to learn" but learning how you learn best in deep and meaningful ways, has a significantly high leverage on so many levels. Especially if you want to translate your professional development efforts into better results for your clients.
Based on a simple and deep 4 tenet framework of Create, Capture, Retrieve and Synthesis, Deep Learner is specifically designed to help you have a high impact on translating your inputs into gains.
Why I Care About this Area?
I used to be embarrassed about saying this...I sucked at school. I had to do an extra year in high school. I still have nightmares about flopping my Primary School Leaving Exams in Singapore (In my dream, I had to re-take it).
In my early education, learning wasn't really taking place. As they say, "Elvis has left the building" when it came to learning.
One thing I've learned: An overemphasis on performing can paradoxically impede learning (Listen to this podcast episode #5)
My wish for you is to cultivate a deep learner's mind.
