Frontiers Friday #62. A Keynote Address and The Latest Tools Recommendation
Big gratitude to the folks in the University of New South Wales for allowing a keynote I did to be made publicly available (Hat tip to the Director of Clinc Psych Program, Dr. Chien Hong Gooi for the invite)... and some new tools that I found useful.
🗣 Keynote Address: The Edge and Leverages of Deliberate Practice
The aim of this keynote is to address the current cutting edge development of deliberate practice in psychotherapy, and its implications on how we can leverage to improve our outcomes

🎧 Tech Tool: Snipd
I spend a lot of time listening--even in the car. Taking notes on key things I want to remember is really tricky when I'm on the move. Enter Snipd. Snipd is a podcast app that has this magic ability to bookmark segments AND grab the transcripts of these parts! It's magical. What I do is export those notes to my Personal Learning System (PLS)/ centralised note-taking app, Obsidian (more on this below).
Snipd seems to be at a beta stage, so there isn't a pricing model at this stage i.e., free. There is a function for you to export a core file from whatever podcast application you were previously using to migrate to Snipd. Worked well for me. Finally, the team have been super responsive to some queries I've made.
📒 Tech Tool: Obsidian
I've been using an ultra-simple digital note-taking tool called Simplenote for eons. One key issue I face is that I also take notes on a notebook (especially when I'm brainstorming ideas), and have no straightforward way to centralise all of my notes into one place.
Obsidian allows me to not only add scans of my notebooks, but the other feature that completely blew my mind not just a one-way linking to another note, but a bi-directional linking of notes.
I started playing with Obsidian mid-May this year, and finally made a full migration from Simplenotes to Obsidian August this year.
In the Deep Learner course*, I emphasised how important it is to have a centralised Personal learning system (PLS; see this video). I've played around with many apps, and Obsidian is a real winner--and it's open source!
However, Obsidian can feel a little daunting at first. And there's a ton of super user community plugins. I hope to do a more in-depth video on this in the near future. Drop me an email if this interests you.
* Enrollment to Deep Learner is now has an "evergreen" open door policy, which means you can sign up and go at your own pace with a life-time access
👓 Tech Tool: Reddle Pdf Expert
Most of us are no foreigner to reading pdfs. I tend to read research papers on pdfs and do highlighting and note-taking on them (and I export these to Obsidian for "centralisation"). However, as I save all my pdfs in dropbox, I couldn't seem to be able to make edits to the pdf on mobile devices and have those markups and edits automatically rendered into the original copy. Readdle pdf Expert on my iOS seems to be the only app that can do that. Which means that I do have to restricted to reading research papers on my laptop.
The free version did the job for me.
⏸ Words Worth Contemplating:
"Stop it, and give yourself a chance."
