From My Desk: The Tyranny of Metrics
Book recommendation: Consolations by David Whyte.
Unbelievably penetrating. This is one of the few books I keep by my bedside. Written by poet David David Whyte, this book is not poetry by prose. Whyte takes on 52 ordinary words and provides an oblique look at the undercurrents of our humanity.
From the first chapter, On Anger:
"Anger is the deepest form of compassion, for another, for the world, for the self, for a life, for the body, for family and for our ideals, all vulnerable and all, possibly about to hurt you."
(I don't know about you, but I had to re-read that line a few times before it landed in my mind).
App recommendation: Beeminder
This is one app that is in my recommended list in the web-based workshop Deep Learner. Beeminder is not just about tracking your life like a fitbit. it's "a reminder with a sting."
First, you get to decide what is something sooo important to you that you want to be doing daily. Second, you make a conscious decision to monitor it. Third, if you don' do it, you pay!
Based on the principle of commitment device and maybe even Daniel Kahneman's fear of loss aversion, this is one app that I use consistently.
It sounds ridiculous, but since using Beeminder for more than a year to help me stay on track with my goal of writing, I've lost $1. And it hurt! Paying for an app for a dollar really feels different than losing a dollar. And I've been on track since then.
