#4. The Dyson Vacuum Cleaner and Making Progress Visible
No manufacturing company in the US and UK was initially willing to license his vacuum cleaner.
James Dyson was laughed at for designing a transparent vacuum cleaner that showed all the filth it sucked up.
Today, Dyson the company returns over $500 million in annual profits and employs nearly seven thousand people worldwide. Had the founder given up on the “bagless” vacuum cleaner idea, Dyson would be just another name.
Turns out, therapists have one critical thing to learn from James Dyson's innovation: Making progress visible.

Also, listen at the end for a really important question from one of our listeners.

Note: Scott and I will be featured in two upcoming podcasts, The Very Bad Therapy podcast and The Psychiatry & Psychotherapy podcast. Stay tuned!

We have gotten some questions, and we need more to make the podcast come alive!

Once you are done, email me your voice memo.
It would mean a lot to hear from you. Thanks in advance.

Recently, my co-author, collaborator and friend Scott D. Miller, PhD sat down and shared his personal journey to attain better treatment results. At one point stating “…I wanted to help people. Throughout my training and now 30 plus years as a clinician, I’ve struggled with the deep sense of responsibility that accompanies that objective.” Can you relate?
I’m including the introductory episode, and a link to register to have the rest of the series delivered to your inbox weekly. There is no cost, no strings, no hidden fees, and when you sign up you will automatically be entered into a draw to win a copy of our new book, Better Results: Using Deliberate Practice to Improve Therapeutic Effectiveness, co-authored with Scott and Mark Hubble, PhD.

FROM THE WEB
1. Why Fighting the coronavirus depends on you.
Vox has done a superb job in the visualisation of why social distancing is an effective measure.
2. How to Protect Yourself from COVID-19: Supporting Your Immune System When You May Need it Most
Mark Hyman, MD is one of the few MDs's advice I trust, especially from the perspective of integrative medicine. Read to the end of his article on ways to improve your immune function.
For me, like the 73% of the Australians, we are vitamin D deficit. Vitamin D3 is critical for optimal immune function. I've been on supplements plus controlled exposure for over a year since my lab results.
3. Canada's cancelled basic income trial produces positive results
I've been following the development of various experiments around the world like in Finland and Ontario, testing the idea of universal basic income. This article gives a good view.
4. The Gloria Films: Candid answers to questions therapists ask most
For more than a decade, I've been obsessively getting my hands on any video recordings of therapy sessions from the giants in our field.
And if you have been around long enough, or fortunate enough to be introduced this in your training, The "Gloria tapes" are a seminal watch. In this article, however, the author reveals some dark secrets around why Gloria ended up picking Fritz Perls as her therapist of choice, even though he had been awful to her! (Clue: It has something to do with the filmmaker).
(Hat tip to Ben Fineman and Carrie Wiita for stirring my memory on this!)
At your service.
Blessings,
Daryl
