ON THE FRONTIER: Frontiers of Psychotherapist Newsletter Aug-Sept'18
Hello Folks on the Frontier!
A big warm welcome to new people who has just joined us. I provide (almost) weekly blogs on the topic of individualised professional development. Feel free chime in with your comments in the blog and to connect on our closed facebook group as well. And on a monthly basic, I send out a newsletter, which is full of recommended readings, resources, and updates.
Deliberate Practice Intensive, Aug 2018.
Spent time with Scott Miller, Susanne Bargmann, and Brooke Alexander teaching in Chicago this month.
At the Training of Trainers (TOT) and the Deliberate Practice Intensive, it's so exhilarating to work with a bunch of therapists and thought leaders who are hungry to develop and wanting to raise the bar of mental health service deliveries.
A double bonus for me to meet with folks from the Frontiers list (Keith Klostermann, Patrik Ulander, Elisabet, Justin Douglas, and others), as well as learners from the Reigniting Clinical Supervision Course (e.g., RaeLynn Alvarez Wicklein, Thea Vondracek, Jared Bingham, Jim Reynolds, etc) (more on this course below). What warmth and friendly individuals!
I'm super excited to announce that, on the 17th of Sept'18, we commence with our 4th Batch of the In-depth online course, Reigniting Clinical Supervision!
Anyone who follows this comprehensive step-by-step guide, delivered to you one practical bite-sized at a time, can improve their work in clinical supervision and self-supervision. (Anyway, you shouldn't always trust one source of information. Besides, I'm biased. Read the landing page and listen to what leading practitioners, trainers, and supervisors from all over the world have to say about the course, Reigniting Clinical Supervision.)

Meanderings:
Over the last couple of months, I've been studying the topics of inequality and design thinking. I've been rather disturbed by what I've learned from Richard Watkinson and Kate Pickett's book, The Spirit Level (See also related ted talk in the recommendations below). It turns out that our wellbeing, health, educational and other life outcomes are affected not simply but low SES as compared between countries, but by the disparity within the country we live in.
I've also been contemplating about design thinking, how we can design better learning environments and cultivate better designs for parity. On a somewhat tangent, I've been worrying that the idea of deliberate practice in our field is going to be overhyped, much like the notion of Growth vs Fixed Mindset, Grit, and delayed gratification.
These are still brewing in my mind, and I hope to think aloud with you in further blogs!
RECOMMENDATIONS
Tools and resources that you can use.
Every month, I'd provide you with five tools/resources that I've used and found it to be helpful in my learning process, productivity, or just plain useful.
For this issue, I'd share with you 5 ted talks that influenced me recently:
1. Christoph Niemann: You are fluent in this language (and don't even know it)
2. Richard Wilkinson: How economic inequality harms societies
3. Paul Piff: Does money make you mean? (accompany videos #2 and #3 with this piece, What does ineuality do to our bodies and minds? A conversation between Wilkinson and Piff.
4. Kate Raworth: A healthy economy should be designed to thrive, not grow: The effect kate raworth's presentation had on me was so powerful. I'm now trying to learn as much as I can from her book, The Donut Economics.
5. Monica Lewinsky: The price of shame: Remember Monica? To be honest, I never thought I would watch this. After a recommendation, I'm so glad I did. So important. "There is a difference between speaking up with intention, and speaking up for attention."
Bonus!
6. Why the "wrong side of the tracks" is usually the east side of cities. I know what you thinking, what in the world has this got to do with the world of therapy? I would argue, alot. Along with Wilkinson's ted talk on social inequality, we fail to fully appreciate the impact of SES and inequality on our client's lives.
Let me know if you found this useful or not. If you stuff like this, more to come!

Recent Publications
Peer review publication is such a long-drawn, and frankly, painful process. My colleagues and I are so pleased to have both these papers accepted:
Miller, S. D., Hubble, M., & Chow, D. (in press). The question of expertise in psychotherapy. Journal of Expertise, 1(2).
Miller, S. D., Chow, D., Hubble, M., Wampold, B., Maeschalck, C., & Bargmann, S. (in press). To be or not to be (an expert)? Revisiting the role of deliberate practice in improving performance. High Ability Studies. doi:https://doi.org/10.1080/13598139.2018.1519410
Big thanks to the reviewes and editors. We will be sharing with you once the online first is out!
Til then, please stay in touch. Love to hear back from you, if you have any questions or comments.
